The Ambassador Bridge is reducing toll rates for certain vehicle types starting April 19, 2026, following a period of price increases that began in January 2026. The bridge company announced the changes on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, targeting specific prepaid membership holders.
Under the new pricing structure, cars and motorcycles using a Premier Pass will pay $5.50 US to cross the bridge. This represents a significant reduction from the previous rate of $10 US. The $5.50 US fee is approximately equivalent to $7.50 Cdn.
The Premier Pass is a pre-paid membership system that utilizes a refillable card to facilitate crossings. However, the toll reductions do not apply to all users; cash rates for the crossing remain unchanged. Drivers without a Premier Pass will continue to pay $10 US or $14 Cdn.
Shift in Trade Volume and Competition
The decision to slash rates comes as the Ambassador Bridge has lost its status as the busiest U.S.-Canada trade corridor. According to data from the Bridge and Tunnel Operators Association, Sarnia’s Blue Water Bridge recorded approximately 2.1 million commercial truck trips in 2025, surpassing the Ambassador Bridge, which saw about 1.9 million commercial truck trips during the same period.
The bridge is also facing upcoming competition from the Gordie Howe International Bridge. In March, the Gordie Howe International Bridge announced its own tolling structures, which include a Breakaway toll program costing $4.35 US or $6 Cdn, and a standard crossing rate of $5.75 US or $8 Cdn.
Comparison of Regional Crossing Costs
The adjusted rates at the Ambassador Bridge place it within a competitive landscape of several crossing options between Windsor and Detroit. Current costs for alternative routes include:

- Windsor-Detroit Tunnel: Crossings cost $4.70 US or $5.90 Cdn via the Nexpress program, or $9 US or $8.25 Cdn for standard crossings.
- Gordie Howe International Bridge: Rates range from $4.35 US ($6 Cdn) via the Breakaway program to $5.75 US ($8 Cdn) for standard crossings.
- Ambassador Bridge: Rates for Premier Pass holders will be $5.50 US (approx. $7.50 Cdn), while standard cash rates remain at $10 US ($14 Cdn).
The reduction in tolls for Premier Pass holders follows a period of price volatility, as the bridge company had increased rates just earlier in the year in January 2026. The new rates effective April 19 are intended to address the shifting dynamics of North American trade crossings and the introduction of new infrastructure in the region.
