Amber Glenn Makes History: First U.S. Women’s Skater to Win Two Grand Prix Events in a Season
Amber Glenn won the Cup of China, becoming the first U.S. woman to win two Grand Prix events in a single season in 12 years. At 25, Glenn, the national champion, achieved a personal-best free skate and landed a triple Axel among eight triple jumps. Her total score was 215.54 points, making it the second-highest score this season for senior women.
Glenn finished 3.63 points ahead of Japan’s Mone Chiba, who initially led after the short program but fell during the free skate. Both skaters qualified for the Grand Prix Final in Grenoble, France, with Glenn ranked second in the world for the Grand Prix series.
Glenn expressed surprise and joy at her achievements, particularly after struggling with an ankle injury during the competition. Despite feeling only 75% fit during her performance, she maintained focus and was pleased with the outcome.
The triple Axel is currently the most difficult jump attempted by senior women, with Glenn successfully landing it at each of her three competitions this season. She is one of only five American women to win two Grand Prix events in one season since the series began in 1995.
After facing significant challenges, including severe concussions, Glenn bounced back to win her first senior U.S. title and aims for future successes.
