Soft Rains, a studio comprised of veteran developers from‌ games like⁤ Skyrim and Fallout 4, is set to release‌ Ambrosia Sky, a ‍sci-fi game that defies⁣ easy categorization.Showcased at the⁢ 2025 Summer Game Fest, the game ‌introduces players to Dalia, a woman in‍ a spacesuit who returns to⁣ her home⁢ planet, now ‍overrun by a mysterious, opposed fungal life.

Unlike typical sci-fi‍ shooters, Dalia’s primary tool isn’t ⁤a weapon, but a water gun. Ambrosia‌ Sky focuses on cleaning up the alien ‍overgrowth,⁣ which is vulnerable to water. Beyond the satisfying gameplay, the game delves into deeper themes as Dalia performs ⁣funeral rites for ‌those she knew, ⁢piecing ⁢together their stories through environmental details.

Studio director Joel Burgess‌ said the setting heavily influenced the game’s⁢ development. The team aimed⁣ to create a science fiction story that resonates with contemporary anxieties, moving away from nostalgic‌ tropes.

Burgess, formerly‍ of bethesda,⁤ emphasized the challenge of creating something truly original. For Ambrosia Sky, this meant grounding⁣ the sci-fi setting in human emotion and connection, while also delivering a ‌compelling cleaning experience.

The gameplay⁤ involves blasting away fungus with water, a task that proves surprisingly rewarding. The demo featured unlockable abilities, including⁤ flame and electricity settings for the water gun, and a zero-G mode⁤ for navigating the surroundings. The zero-G element allowed players to float and clean from all angles without motion sickness.

However, Ambrosia‌ Sky offers more ⁢than⁣ just cleaning. Accompanied⁢ by a synth-heavy soundtrack, players uncover⁣ the remains of Dalia’s past acquaintances, reading their final messages ⁣and conducting funeral rites. Burgess noted ‍that voice acting will be included in the final version, enhancing the emotional impact.

The game’s composer, Greg Harrison,⁣ incorporated⁢ unique instruments to create the emotional tone. Burgess highlighted the use of jaw ⁤harps⁤ from various cultures, reflecting ⁢the diverse influences within the game’s world.
