AMC Theatres is entering the film distribution business with the launch of Leawood Films, a new label designed to bring small and mid-sized independent movies to theaters. According to a company press release Monday, the label will focus on fully financed and completed features, allowing filmmakers to retain ownership of their intellectual property and downstream revenues.
The move follows AMC’s success with self-distributed event cinema. AMC previously partnered with Variance for the North American booking of 2023’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
, which earned $261.6 million worldwide, and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé
, which grossed $44 million worldwide. The new label provides a vehicle for the company to release content beyond concert documentaries.
AMC CEO Adam Aron stated that the initiative addresses substantial excess capacity
within the movie theater industry. He described the effort as a way to ensure more movies reach screens, calling the potential results gravy for AMC in the United States and Odeon in Europe, as well as for our fellow exhibitors
.
Leawood Films Operational Structure and Personnel
Named after the Kansas town where AMC is headquartered, Leawood Films will maintain offices in both Leawood and Los Angeles. The label will operate as a gun-for-hire distributor
, meaning it will not finance, develop, or produce films itself.
The venture is guided by an advisory board reporting to Aron. This group includes:
- Toby Emmerich, former Warner Bros Group chairman
- Ricky Strauss, former Walt Disney Studios marketing president
- Kyle Davies, former Paramount distribution veteran who is exiting his role at Bleecker Street
Entertainment attorney Craig Jacobson, a founding partner of Hansen Jacobson, will represent the label. Variance will continue to handle distribution for the Leawood slate, while AMC manages marketing. Piece of Magic Entertainment will handle overseas distribution.
Theatrical Windows and Market Strategy

Leawood Films will implement specific release windows to balance theatrical exclusivity with digital availability. Titles will abide by a 45-day exclusive theatrical window or greater on Premium VOD, and a 90-day-to-streaming window.
Aron clarified that the label is a modestly scaled initiative
and will not compete with major studio blockbusters. He stated that it is highly unlikely
that Leawood Films will include blockbuster tentpole-type releases, emphasizing that the label is intended to complement existing studio partnerships rather than replace them.
While the films will play at AMC locations, the company intends to book the slate at rival circuits around the globe. The first titles to be announced coming under the Leawood label are expected in 2027 or 2028.
Industry Context and Financial Risks

This is not the first time AMC has attempted distribution. The company launched Open Road Films as a joint venture with Regal back in 2011, releasing titles such as Nightcrawler
and winning the Best Picture Oscar with Spotlight
before selling its stake in 2017.
The current move comes amid a shift in industry regulations. The end of the Paramount Decrees has meant that the lines between studio and exhibitor have blurred, citing Sony Pictures owns Alamo Drafthouse as an example of the blurring lines.
However, the venture carries financial risks. AMC has around $4 billion still in debt and the independent film market is a fickle market, with many indie distributors telling that releasing independent films is a hard business.
Despite these risks, Aron maintains that the industry benefits when more high-quality films are available to theatrical moviegoers, stating that the initiative is designed to achieve exactly that.
