Valve is planning to launch its new Steam Machine gaming console, a device significantly more powerful than the Steam Deck, in early 2026. This confirmation comes from AMD CEO Lisa Su, who stated during an earnings call that Valve is “on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year.” This reinforces Valve’s previously stated goal of a 2026 release, with a potential debut in the first quarter.

The Steam Machine, described as a six-inch cube designed for use under a TV or on a desk, aims to bridge the gap between PC gaming and console simplicity. It will allow users to access their entire Steam library, with games receiving a “Steam Machine Verified” tag to indicate compatibility, mirroring the “Steam Deck Verified” system. According to Valve, the new console boasts six times the processing power of the Steam Deck.

Alongside the Steam Machine, Valve is also releasing a new virtual reality headset, the Steam Frame, and a redesigned Steam Controller. The Steam Frame is designed as a “streaming-first” VR experience, offering wireless connectivity and compatibility with both VR and non-VR titles. Like the Steam Machine, it will feature a “Steam Frame Verified” tag to highlight compatible games. A key feature of the Steam Frame is Foveated Streaming, which optimizes image quality by focusing detail on where the user is looking, utilizing low-latency eye tracking.

Valve has indicated that the Steam Machine will be priced in line with PCs offering similar performance levels, rather than being subsidized to reach a lower price point like traditional consoles. Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve developer, stated the company aims to offer a “good deal” competitive with building a PC with equivalent specifications. However, a precise price point has not yet been revealed.

The upcoming launch of the Steam Machine is occurring amidst ongoing challenges in the RAM market. Rising RAM prices could potentially impact Valve’s ability to maintain its desired pricing structure. However, the company appears committed to launching the device as planned, with shipping expected to begin soon, potentially as early as March. The use of the term “shipping” suggests that pre-orders could open before units are physically delivered to customers, following a similar pattern to the Steam Deck’s release.

While details remain limited, the Steam Machine represents a significant step in Valve’s ambitions for PC gaming and the broader adoption of Linux. The device’s success could hinge on its ability to deliver a compelling gaming experience at a competitive price, despite the current market conditions. The fact that AMD CEO Lisa Su specifically mentioned the Steam Machine’s on-track release is a positive indicator, suggesting that a launch in the first quarter of 2026 remains a realistic possibility.
