PepsiCo has announced that its Mountain Dew brand will temporarily rebrand as “American Dew” for the summer of 2026 to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary and honor the soda’s Tennessee origins. The limited-edition rebrand launches on April 20, 2026, and will be available nationwide throughout the summer months. This marks the first time in nearly 80 years that Mountain Dew has undergone a temporary identity change, reflecting a major marketing initiative tied to American heritage.
The rebrand is the centerpiece of PepsiCo’s “An American Original” campaign, a summer-long tribute designed to connect the beverage’s history with national celebrations. According to Michael Smith, VP of Marketing for Mountain Dew, the initiative celebrates the brand’s roots dating back to 1948, when two brothers in Tennessee developed the high-caffeine citrus formula that became Mountain Dew. Smith stated that “American Dew is a tangible celebration of that story, created to mark this moment in a meaningful way.”
As part of the campaign, PepsiCo has introduced a new mascot, “The Mountain Dude,” who appears in a creative spot titled “Hoedown.” The character serves as a connective thread guiding consumers through the brand’s origin story and its ties to Tennessee independence and grit. The mascot will feature in promotional materials and advertising throughout the summer of 2026.
To further engage consumers, PepsiCo is offering a sweepstakes that gives fans the chance to win $250 cash prizes in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Entries can be submitted at www.americandew.com until July 11, 2026. The “American Dew” packaging, featuring red, white, and blue designs, will be distributed in cans and bottles across retail channels nationwide for the duration of the summer season.
The temporary name change represents a significant moment in beverage marketing, aligning a major soft drink brand with a national milestone. By leveraging its historical Tennessee roots and tying them to the country’s semiquincentennial, PepsiCo aims to strengthen brand affinity while participating in broader cultural conversations about American heritage. The campaign will run exclusively through the summer of 2026, after which the Mountain Dew name will return to its standard branding.
