American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson was released on April 7, 2026, after being held for one week by the Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah in Baghdad.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the release, stating that the U.S. Government is working to support Kittleson’s safe departure from Iraq. The release follows the abduction of the 49-year-old journalist on March 31, 2026.

Terms of Release and Diplomatic Coordination

Kataib Hezbollah announced the decision to free Kittleson on the condition that she leave Iraq immediately. While the militia specified this condition in a post on its Telegram channel, other reports indicate a broader arrangement.

Two militia officials told the Associated Press that the release of Kittleson was conducted in exchange for the release of several detained members of Kataib Hezbollah by Iraqi authorities.

FBI Director Kash Patel described the operation as a relentless effort involving the Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, the State Department, the Department of War, and other federal partners. Secretary of State Rubio also credited the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council and Iraqi partners for their assistance in securing the journalist’s freedom.

We are relieved that this American is now free and are working to support her safe departure from Iraq.

Details of the Abduction

Kittleson was abducted on March 31, 2026, from a street corner on Saadoun Street in central Baghdad. Video footage of the incident shows two men approaching her and ushering her into the back of a vehicle following a brief struggle to close the car door.

The Iraqi government reported that security forces pursued the suspects, resulting in one of the kidnappers’ vehicles overturning and the arrest of one individual. Following the event, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani ordered security forces to pursue those responsible for the abduction of foreigners.

During her captivity, the militia released an undated video approximately two and a half minutes long. In the footage, Kittleson is seen wearing a green blazer and a pink sweater while speaking directly to the camera.

Professional Risk and Geopolitical Context

The abduction occurred during a period of heightened instability, characterized by attacks by Iran and allied Iraqi Shia militias on U.S.-associated targets. These hostilities have escalated since the beginning of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Sources indicate that Kataib Hezbollah had included Kittleson’s name on a list of American journalists targeted for kidnapping. Prior to her abduction, U.S. Officials had contacted Kittleson on multiple occasions to warn her of specific threats from Iran-backed paramilitaries.

Kittleson, a freelance journalist, had worked for several years in both Iraq and Syria. Her emergency contact and friend, CNN national security analyst Alex Plitsas, noted that the U.S. Government had provided warnings regarding the risks she faced in the region.
