Summer Camps Evolve to reflect Changing American Childhood
At the start of the 20th century, summer camps saw growth as college-educated women began leading groups of girls into outdoor adventures. These women viewed thier work as a passion, providing girls with unique experiences. Simultaneously, urban organizations recognized the value of these retreats for impoverished, working-class children, offering them country experiences often shorter than those at private camps.
The early 1900s also saw the rise of movements like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Campfire girls. Ethnic and religious groups, including Jewish and Catholic Americans, established camps tailored for their children. By this time,a diverse array of camps catered to a broader range of children,aiming to provide outdoor experiences.
The concept of protected childhood gained traction during this period, with laws restricting child labour and emphasizing child protection. Camps became early havens where children could enjoy time apart from the adult world and experience vacations, especially for working-class kids who had never left the city.
Today, the summer camp industry is a $3.5 billion business, adapting to changing family dynamics as the 1970s. Specialty camps focusing on specific interests like basketball,computers,or theater emerged. Camps also adjusted to shorter schedules to accommodate family travel and custody arrangements.
Modern summer camps retain core elements from their origins while adapting to clients’ complex lives, ensuring the industry’s continued success. Camps also provide essential child care, benefiting parents juggling summer arrangements.
One of the things I talk about in my book is that camps were a place where children learned nostalgia, that camps taught them a version of the American past. Camps were often a place where children were exposed to ideas about what the American past had been, and then as more generations of children attended camps, thay themselves brought those kinds of nostalgic memories with them, throughout their lives.
