From Minnesota Farm to Presidential Pardon: One Turkey’s Thanksgiving Journey
Minneapolis, MN – Diane Wu, producer for the annual Presidential Turkey Pardon ceremony, arrived in Minnesota this week with a mission: to select the lucky bird who will receive a reprieve from the Thanksgiving table.
Wu, a veteran of the tradition, knows the weight of this decision. “It’s not just about picking a healthy turkey,” she explained. “We’re looking for a bird with personality, one who can handle the spotlight and charm the nation.”
This year’s contenders hail from a family farm in the heart of Minnesota’s turkey country. Rows of plump birds strutted in the crisp autumn air, their gobbles echoing through the barn. Wu, accompanied by a team of veterinarians and poultry experts, carefully observed each bird, assessing their temperament, size, and overall health.

“we want a turkey who’s curious, not skittish,” Wu said, watching as one particularly bold bird pecked at her boots. “Thay’ll be meeting the President, after all!”
the chosen turkey will spend the next few weeks preparing for their big debut. They’ll receive special training to acclimate to crowds and flashing cameras, ensuring they remain calm and collected during the pardon ceremony.
The lucky bird will then travel to Washington D.C.,where they’ll be the guest of honor at the White House. After receiving their pardon from the President, they’ll live out their days in a cozy sanctuary, a far cry from the Thanksgiving dinner plate.
For Wu,the journey from Minnesota farm to presidential pardon is a reminder of the unique traditions that make Thanksgiving so special. “It’s a chance to celebrate gratitude, compassion, and the enduring bond between humans and animals,” she said.
