MUNICH – The Detroit Lions are heading to Munich, Germany, for a regular season NFL game in 2026, bringing star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown back to his mother’s homeland. The game, slated for FC Bayern Munich Stadium, represents a significant moment for both the team and the rapidly growing NFL fanbase in Germany.

The Lions’ opponent, game date, and kickoff time will be announced when the full 2026 NFL schedule is released in the spring. However, the confirmation of Detroit’s participation has already generated considerable excitement, particularly for St. Brown, who has consistently expressed his desire to play in front of fans in Germany.

“It has been my dream ever since I came into the league to play in my mother’s home country of Germany,” St. Brown said in a league statement. “I can’t wait to play in front of the incredible fans I have met through my visits and football camps in this country.”

St. Brown’s connection to Germany runs deep. His mother was born there, and he has actively engaged with German fans through visits and football camps. Last summer, he and his brother, Equanimeous St. Brown of the San Francisco 49ers, co-hosted a youth football training camp in Munich, inspiring a new generation of players. “I can relate to these kids,” St. Brown said in June. “I can understand them because I was a kid like that at this camp ten years ago. I wanted to do everything so that the coaches could see how good I am and how fast I can run.”

The Lions’ commitment to the German market extends beyond St. Brown’s personal connection. The team has been actively building its brand in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) since 2024, as part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program. Initiatives include the creation of Leo Löwe, a mascot with a German flag-inspired mane, and hosting Thanksgiving Day Classic watch parties in Cologne. A streetwear collaboration with German designer MiDNIGHT in 2025 further demonstrates the team’s investment in the local culture.

The upcoming game in Munich is part of a record schedule of nine international games planned for 2026, with new host cities also slated in France, Australia, and Brazil. Munich has already hosted two successful NFL games, in 2022 and 2024, establishing itself as a key location for the league’s international expansion. Frankfurt and Berlin have also previously hosted NFL games.

The Lions’ participation in the 2026 Munich game comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise. St. Brown, selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly become a cornerstone of the team’s offense. His performance has earned him a four-year contract worth $120.01 million, with $77 million guaranteed. With 11 touchdowns last season, he has solidified his status as a fan favorite and a key player in Detroit’s aspirations for championship contention.

Rod Wood, Detroit Lions President & CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for the international game. “We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” Wood said. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”

The NFL’s continued expansion into international markets is a strategic move to broaden its global reach and tap into new fan bases. Germany, with its growing enthusiasm for American football, represents a particularly promising market. The league intends to continue hosting games in Munich and Berlin over the next three years, solidifying its presence in the region.

For Amon-Ra St. Brown, the 2026 game in Munich is more than just another contest on the NFL schedule. It’s a chance to connect with his heritage, play in front of a passionate fanbase, and showcase Detroit football on an international stage. It’s a dream realized, and a testament to the growing global appeal of the National Football League.
