Amtrak services between Boston and Kingston have been cancelled after a large steel beam fell onto the tracks in Cranston, Rhode Island, disrupting rail operations along the Northeast Corridor.
The incident occurred when a parapet on the on-ramp between Route 10 North and Interstate 95 North in Cranston dislodged from the bridge and fell onto the railroad tracks below, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). The falling debris prompted an immediate suspension of train services in the affected area.
As of Saturday morning, April 25, 2026, Amtrak reported that engineers were working through the night to assess the damage and began efforts to restore service. The agency anticipated that the first of three tracks in the area would be returned to service by late morning, with trains operating on that track pulled by diesel locomotives while repairs continue on the catenary system.
Amtrak expected a second track to resume electric train operations by mid-afternoon and a third track to be restored by early morning on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Until full service is restored, customers should expect delays as repair work progresses.
Specific service adjustments for Saturday, April 25, include the cancellation of several Northeast Regional and Acela trains. Northeast Regional No. 160 is canceled between New Haven, Connecticut, and Boston. Northeast Regional No. 135 is canceled between Boston and New Haven and will depart from New Haven instead. Northeast Regional Nos. 99 and 195 are canceled between Boston and New York and will originate from New York.
Acela Nos. 2249, 2252, and 2271 are canceled, along with Northeast Regional Nos. 150, 161, and 162. Meanwhile, Northeast Regional Nos. 87 and 163, as well as Acela Nos. 2248 and 2255, will operate as scheduled but with anticipated delays due to ongoing repair work in Rhode Island.
The ramp from Route 10 North to Interstate 95 North remains closed at this time, and authorities are advising motorists to use alternative routes. RIDOT officials stated that engineers are continuing to evaluate the structural integrity of the bridge and surrounding infrastructure.
Amtrak emphasized that safety inspections and repair efforts are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as conditions evolve. Passengers are encouraged to check Amtrak’s official channels for real-time service information and potential changes to their travel plans.
