A 2019 police report has surfaced involving Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio, detailing a domestic dispute at her residence. According to records from August 2019, police in Bexley, Ohio, responded to a call at the home of Acton, who was serving as the director of the Ohio Department of Health at the time.

The police report states that Acton became upset because she felt her husband was antagonizing her, leading her to pull a mirror off the wall and shatter the glass. Acton informed responding officers that she had been drinking and had consumed an unknown quantity of prescription drugs. The report further notes that Acton was preparing to drive away in her vehicle before her husband, who also told police he had been drinking, persuaded her not to do so.

A medic dispatched to the scene recommended that Acton be taken to a hospital, but she refused the recommendation. Following an investigation, police determined there was no evidence of physical violence between Acton and her husband. The incident was characterized as a verbal argument over her extended work hours.

On April 10, 2026, Acton’s campaign disputed and sought to clarify several elements of the police report.

Political Background and Candidacy

Dr. Acton, 60, rose to prominence as one of Ohio’s primary leaders during the Covid-19 pandemic. In that role, she advised Governor Mike DeWine and appeared in daily briefings to share case numbers and issue stay-at-home orders. Acton resigned from her position as health director in June 2020. She is currently running for governor on a platform of change, stating that she refuses to look the other way while politicians and special interests keep moving us backward in the state.

Political Background and Candidacy

Acton is expected to face Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the general election. Ramaswamy, a 39-year-old biotech entrepreneur and billionaire, previously served as an advisor to President Donald Trump and co-led the Department of Government Efficiency alongside Elon Musk. Ramaswamy announced his candidacy during an address in Cincinnati, stating his goal is to lead Ohio to become a state of excellence in America.

The 2026 gubernatorial race is notable as the first time in Ohio history that a white male is not at the top of either major party ticket. Incumbent Governor Mike DeWine is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.

Candidate Field and Policy Clashes

While Acton and Ramaswamy are viewed as frontrunners, other candidates are involved in the race. On the Republican side, Ohio State Attorney General Dave Yost has announced his bid to replace DeWine. Other potential GOP candidates include Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel and House Representatives Mike Carney and Warren Davidson. On the Democratic side, former House Representative and 2020 presidential candidate Tim Ryan has expressed interest in the race.

Campaigning has already shifted toward policy disputes. Acton’s campaign has criticized a proposal from Ramaswamy to study the consolidation of Ohio’s public colleges and universities, arguing that such a plan would devastate local communities. Acton’s campaign further claimed that Ramaswamy has suggested Ohioans are lazy and that rising costs are in our imagination.

In response, the Ramaswamy campaign has targeted Acton’s affordability plan, which includes tax breaks and medical debt forgiveness. The Ramaswamy campaign described her agenda as following the NYC playbook of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alleging that the plan would result in higher taxes, bigger government, and billions in new spending.

The general election for the Ohio governorship is scheduled to take place in October 2026.
