Investigation Launched After Mohamed Shawki‘s Death
The Medical Committee of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced an urgent investigation into the death of Mohamed Shawki, a defender for Kafr El-Sheikh. He died on Tuesday morning after a health crisis during a match against Al-Qazzajin Youth Center Club in the Egyptian Second Division League. The investigation will determine if there was any negligence regarding his health condition.
Incident on the Field
Mohamed Shawki, 29, collapsed on the field during the game. Despite rapid medical attention, he could not be revived. He was taken to Zarqa Central Hospital in Damietta Governorate, where medical staff attempted to resuscitate him, but he passed away early Tuesday.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has ordered a thorough inquiry into the circumstances of Shawki’s fall and the availability of first aid during the match. The minister emphasized the need for strict legal action if any negligence is found.
Remembering Mohamed Shawki
Before his health crisis, Shawki shared a poignant message on Facebook: “Do not hate adversity, for it keeps the hypocrite away from you and brings the truthful closer to you.” These words resonated deeply with his fans and teammates as a farewell.
Shawki was born on June 7, 1995. He had a notable career as a center back, playing for clubs such as Ghazal El Mohalla and Sporting Castle before joining Kafr El-Sheikh Club. His teammates praised his defensive skills and friendly nature. Kafr El-Sheikh Club expressed their sorrow on social media, stating, “Eyes are filled with tears and hearts are saddened by your passing. God bless you, Shawki.”
Ongoing Concerns in Egyptian Football
Shawki’s passing raises alarms about player safety in Egyptian football. This incident echoes the death of Ahmed Refaat, another player who suffered a heart attack during a match last July. Such tragedies point to ongoing concerns about medical preparedness during games.
Mohamed Shawki will be buried in his family grave in Gharbia Governorate following a heartfelt goodbye from family and friends.
