According to a report by the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)⁢ have developed plans for a “large-scale attack⁢ against Hezbollah positions” in Lebanon. The⁣ plans are contingent on the failure of the Lebanese government and lebanese⁤ army to enforce the disarmament of hezbollah by the ⁢end of 2025.

This threat follows the completion of joint military exercises between the Israeli Navy and the U.S. fifth Fleet. These five-day maneuvers, conducted in the Mediterranean Sea, Haifa Bay, the Nahariya region, and‌ the Red Sea, aimed to “enhance⁣ coordination” and “expand the ability to jointly respond to complex threat scenarios in the maritime environment,” ⁤according to the IDF statement. The exercises⁢ also focused ‍on exchanging operational experiences and ⁤developing new technologies for⁤ naval operations.

Background: Hezbollah and the Israel-Lebanon Conflict

Hezbollah, a Shiite Islamist political party and militant group, was founded in 1982 during the lebanese Civil War.⁣ It has ‌been a consistent source of tension ⁣with Israel, engaging in several conflicts, including the 2006 Lebanon War. Hezbollah maintains a significant ‌military presence in southern Lebanon,⁤ despite UN ‍Security Council Resolution ‌1701, passed ⁢after the 2006 war, which called for the‌ disarmament of all armed groups in the region.

The current escalation is linked to the‌ ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in ‍Gaza, which began⁢ on October 7, 2023. Hezbollah has increased its attacks on Israeli positions along the border in support of Hamas, leading to retaliatory strikes from Israel. These exchanges have raised fears of a wider conflict.
