Amphibians in Africa are serving as critical but overlooked biological sentinels, according to a report published in the journal Science on April 2, 2026. The research indicates that these species are currently at risk because they have not been adequately incorporated into existing conservation frameworks across the continent.

The report, authored by Mwale Wakila Bienvenu, Yedidya Musangania Elikya, Akonkwa Shabani Emery, Paul Scholte, Amaël Borzée, and other colleagues, argues that the neglect of these animals is not due to a lack of ecological relevance. Instead, the authors point to systemic failures in how biodiversity is managed and funded in Africa.

Systemic Barriers to Conservation

The failure to protect these sentinel species is attributed to chronic underinvestment and a significant lack of in-country expertise. These gaps have left amphibian populations vulnerable and under-monitored.
