Google unveiled a universal agent and API framework at its Gemini at Work 2026 event, positioning the technology as a potential gatekeeper for enterprise operating systems. The newly introduced Gemini agent operates autonomously from a single prompt box, handling tasks across days while connecting to internal systems and external applications.
Google Cloud Agents Function Across Multiple Devices and Platforms
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated during his keynote that the system allows users to give objectives rather than instructions. The agent runs in the cloud with omnipresent access, meaning it functions across iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac devices through command-line interfaces, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, or third-party applications.
Each coworker agent receives a dedicated identity, including an @agents.company.com email address and persistent storage. These agents can spin up temporary sub-agents to coordinate multi-step workflows running sequentially or in parallel over multiple days.
Enterprises Can Choose Between Gemini and External Models
Independent tech analyst Carmi Levy said that Google is attempting to establish itself as the gatekeeper of a new enterprise operating system powered by flexible model selection. The system allows enterprises to use either Gemini models or external offerings like Claude, depending on cost and workload requirements.

Mahmoud Ramin, a research director at Info-Tech Research Group, noted that while the announcement does not create a completely new category, the agent’s ability to operate directly inside Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and Slides alongside external tools provides practical utility for repetitive tasks and information synthesis.
Organizations Must Enforce Strict Guardrails for Autonomous Agents
Google stated that its enterprise agents operate only within specifically defined data channels, supported by built-in security, governance, and cost controls. Levy observed that Google is arguably leading industry conversations around identity, audit trails, and workflow accountability.
Ramin emphasized that organizations deploying autonomous agents must enforce strict guardrails regarding permissions, identity, and system audits. Enterprises need to clearly outline which data agents can access and which decisions they are permitted to make without direct human oversight.
