Ananda Lewis, the popular MTV personality and breast cancer awareness advocate, died June 5 at age 52, following a prolonged fight with stage IV breast cancer. Her sister, lakshmi Lewis, announced the news via Facebook.
Born in Los Angeles on March 21, 1973, Lewis became a prominent figure in the 1990s, hosting BET’s Teen Summit. Her insightful interviews,notably a 1996 conversation with Hillary Clinton,earned her an NAACP Image Award. She than brought her charisma to MTV in 1997,appearing on Total Request Live and Hot Zone,where she balanced celebrity interviews with coverage of serious issues.
In 2001,Lewis launched The Ananda Lewis Show,focusing on domestic violence and women’s health. Later, she appeared on The Insider and hosted TLC’s While You Were Out revival in 2019. A Howard University graduate, she also championed carpentry, animal rights, and motherhood.
Lewis revealed her stage III breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, admitting she had delayed mammograms due to radiation concerns. By 2024, the cancer had progressed. She explored choice therapies, later regretting her decision not to undergo a double mastectomy.
During a CNN roundtable, Lewis said she “thoght I was protecting myself.”
In her final months, lewis endured significant pain and spent eight weeks in hospice at her Los Angeles home. She passed away just hours before her son, Langston, graduated from middle school.
Tributes poured in on social media, with fans remembering her as “our ’90s queen.” Stephanie Elam praised her courage. Clips from Teen Summit resurfaced, prompting many to emphasize the importance of early cancer screenings, particularly for Black women. A public memorial is planned for july.
