Initial Arrest and Allegations
FHD, a 43-year-old man, was released from custody this Saturday after being arrested for alleged involvement in a fire in the Maule region of Chile. His release came after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to proceed with charges.
According to La Radio, witnesses reportedly saw FHD on December 24th allegedly lighting a fire with a lighter in grasslands near Numpay.
Prosecutor’s Decision and Clarification
Prosecutor Claudia Díaz explained that the decision not to charge FHD was based on a lack of sufficient evidence and criminal record. She stated the Prosecutor’s Office initially requested an extension of his detention to conduct further inquiry.
“We requested this extension as it appeared to the Prosecutor’s Office that greater and better procedures needed to be carried out, in accordance with the principle of objectivity, than those prior to the arrest,” Díaz told the media.
Crucially, a search of FHD’s clothing revealed No lighter was found
, according to Díaz.
FHD’s Account
FHD himself stated to the media that he was asleep when police detained him. “The first one they accuse, that is,the first one they see there, they accuse of anything. I was sleeping in a tent and they came and put me in the car. My clothing had nothing to do with what they said,” he recounted.
