The Coyotes’ Departure and NHL Control
After years of financial instability, the Arizona Coyotes effectively ceased operations in April 2024.Alex Meruelo relinquished ownership, and the NHL dissolved the team’s intellectual property, taking direct control of its assets.
The Doan Family Steps forward
now, a new group, spearheaded by the family of former Coyotes captain Shane Doan, is actively working to bring NHL hockey back to Arizona. Craig Morgan of the Arizona Insider reports that Andrea Doan, Shane’s wife, will chair an advisory committee dedicated to this effort. This committee will focus on building community support and presenting a compelling case to the NHL.
Shane Doan played 15 seasons with the Coyotes franchise (originally the Winnipeg Jets), becoming a beloved figure in the Phoenix hockey community. His family’s deep roots and established connections within the region are expected to be a notable asset in garnering public and political backing.
NHL Expansion Landscape and Phoenix’s Position
While the NHL currently holds the Coyotes’ intellectual property, Commissioner Gary Bettman has indicated the league won’t prioritize any specific location for future expansion. Bettman has historically expressed a desire to maintain a presence in Phoenix, despite the challenges.
Competing bids have emerged from Houston, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, both cities with existing infrastructure and demonstrated interest in hosting an NHL team. However, the Doan family’s local ties and potential to mobilize community support could give Phoenix a competitive edge.
Challenges and Path Forward
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the Doan-led initiative, significant hurdles remain. Securing a suitable arena remains a key challenge, as the Coyotes previously operated out of Mullett Arena, a smaller venue designed for Arizona State University’s hockey program. A long-term, NHL-caliber arena is considered essential for a successful franchise.
The group will need to demonstrate to the NHL that a financially viable ownership structure and a strong, enduring fan base exist in Phoenix. Building on the existing hockey community and attracting new fans will be crucial to achieving this goal.
