Andrew Omobamidele’s hopes of helping Strasbourg reach the Coupe de France final were ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Nice in the semi-final second leg at La Meinau.

The Republic of Ireland defender started in the heart of defence for Gary O’Neill’s side, making his 33rd appearance of the season for the Ligue 1 club. Strasbourg had entered the tie needing to overturn a deficit from the first leg, but Nice progressed after scoring twice in the second half.

Elya Wahi opened the scoring for Nice shortly after the break with their first shot on target. The visitors then sealed their passage to the final with a second goal from the penalty spot eight minutes from time.

Omobamidele was replaced in the 65th minute as Strasbourg pushed for a goal to keep their hopes alive. The 23-year-old Kildare native joined Strasbourg last summer in an €8 million move from Nottingham Forest after an unhappy spell at the Premier League club.

Despite the cup disappointment, Omobamidele expressed confidence that the result would not impact the team’s continental ambitions. Strasbourg are set to face Rayo Vallecano in the next round of the UEFA Conference League, with a place in the final at stake.

“We need to try our best to take positives out of it. This loss won’t define our season,” Omobamidele told French media after the match.

The defender has won 10 international caps for the Republic of Ireland, with his last appearance coming against Greece in September 2024. He remains the only Irish player still involved in European competition this season.

Elsewhere in European football, Bayern Munich advanced to the DFB-Pokal final with a 2-0 semi-final victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Harry Kane scored in the first half for the newly crowned Bundesliga champions, with Luis Diaz adding a second-half stoppage-time goal.

Bayern will face the winners of the upcoming semi-final between Stuttgart and Freiburg in the final, as they pursue a domestic double this season.
