Andrew Rosendorf Explores Playwriting Role, Sexuality on ’The Subtext’

Minneapolis-based playwright Andrew Rosendorf recently appeared on “The Subtext” podcast to discuss his life, his work, and the personal experiences that have shaped his playwriting. Rosendorf, known for plays such as Refuge, co-created with Satya Jnani Chávez, One-Shot, Stockade, and Paper Cut, spoke with Brian, the podcast host, about his move to the Twin Cities and his time at the Playwrights’ Center.
Rosendorf revealed that playwriting became an outlet for him to address challenging family dynamics and explore his sexuality, issues he found arduous to confront directly in his personal life. His experiences at Florida Stage were also formative, helping him to discover his unique playwriting voice.The playwright’s journey highlights the power of creative expression in navigating personal challenges and finding one’s artistic identity.
His plays have been produced or developed at numerous venues, including La Jolla, MCC, DCPA, KC Rep, Signature Theater, unicorn Theatre, American Theater Company, Nashville rep, City theatre, Geva Theatre, Actor’s Express and Curious Theatre Company. Rosendorf is also the recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, a Venturous Theater Fund Grant, and a MAP Fund Grant. He is an alum of the Goodman’s Playwrights Unit and NNPN’s Playwright-in-Residence program, as well as a former McKnight and Jerome Fellow at the Playwrights’ Center.
