Shift in Automotive Interface Strategy
Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced it will discontinue support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its vehicles beginning with the 2024 model year. This decision, first reported on November 16, 2023, marks a meaningful departure from industry norms and reflects Polestar’s commitment to a vertically integrated infotainment system.
Focus on Native Android Automotive OS
Rather of relying on smartphone mirroring technologies, Polestar will fully embrace its native Android Automotive operating System (AAOS). AAOS, developed in collaboration with Google, is an embedded operating system directly integrated into the vehicle’s hardware. This allows for over-the-air updates and a more consistent user experience, autonomous of external devices. Polestar was the first automaker to utilize the Android Automotive OS in 2021.
Rationale Behind the Change
According to Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s CEO, the decision stems from a desire to maintain greater control over the user experience and to streamline software development. Ingenlath stated that integrating Android Auto and Apple carplay introduces complexities and potential conflicts with the native AAOS. Polestar believes a unified system will deliver a more refined and reliable in-car experience.
Impact on Existing owners
the change will not affect Polestar vehicles already equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.Existing functionality will continue to be supported in those models. However, new Polestar vehicles delivered from early 2024 onward will no longer include these features. The final vehicles to offer these features will be those produced in November 2023.
Industry Implications and Alternatives
Polestar’s move is a bold one, potentially setting a precedent for other automakers to prioritize native infotainment systems. while some drivers may prefer the familiarity of android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the native AAOS offers direct access to Google services like Google Assistant, Google maps, and the Google Play Store. Polestar emphasizes that its system will continue to evolve with new features and improvements, aiming to provide a compelling alternative to smartphone mirroring.
