android Cross-Device Services:⁣ Instant Hotspot Now Default

Updated May 31, 2025

Android users can now enjoy a more seamless experience⁣ with Google’s ⁢Cross-device services. The instant⁤ hotspot feature, similar to⁢ Apple’s Continuity, is now⁢ enabled by‍ default on new Android‍ phones.‍ This simplifies ⁢data sharing between devices, eliminating the need for manual⁢ setup.

The Cross-device services menu,‍ introduced last September via a Play System update, includes the⁢ instant hotspot feature.Previously, users‍ had to navigate thru obscure settings to enable it. Now,‍ Google has streamlined the process, automatically activating the feature during the initial⁤ phone setup.

The change was observed during the setup of a realme GT⁣ 7 Dream Edition. A notification appeared on a Pixel 9 Pro XL, indicating that the new phone could share ‍video calls. ⁣Further‍ inquiry revealed that cross-device‍ services, including call casting and instant hotspot, were already active without manual configuration.

With this update, Android users will find⁢ that their ‍phones ⁣automatically ⁢offer a hotspot connection when a secondary, data-less device is nearby.⁣ As long as both devices are logged into⁤ the same Google account, the connection should occur seamlessly.

To test the new default, a ⁤Pixel 9 Pro XL with a data⁤ connection and a realme GT⁤ 7 without data were used. After walking away from a Wi-Fi network, the realme⁣ phone displayed a “Use your ⁢phone’s hotspot” pop-up. Tapping the notification⁢ instantly activated the Pixel’s hotspot, providing a⁢ connection ⁤without any manual ⁢password entry or setup.

What’s next

While the instant ⁤hotspot feature is a welcome addition, users should ensure⁢ that Cross-device services are enabled on‍ their primary device. Auto-enrollment may also depend on the Play Services version pre-installed on the ⁤new ‍phone. Despite these caveats, the default activation of instant hotspot promises⁣ a more user-amiable experience ‍for⁣ Android users.
