Android Tablet Multitasking Improvements – Google
Android Tablets May Soon Support Bubbling Apps
Android currently allows users to ”bubble” conversations, enabling them to float above other apps for quick access. A recently discovered feature suggests Google is extending this functionality to allow bubbling of entire apps on Android tablets.
Evidence of this feature surfaced in Android 16‘s code, including a complete tutorial with animations, suggesting the feature is nearing completion. Android Authority first reported on the discovery of the drag-to-bubble gesture for tablets.
how Bubbling Apps Could Work
The feature appears to function similarly to conversation bubbles. Users would likely drag an app icon from the taskbar or recent apps screen to create a bubble. This bubble would then float on top of other apps, allowing for quick access without fully switching to the app.
This functionality would significantly enhance multitasking on Android tablets, especially for users who frequently switch between apps or need to monitor multiple applications simultaneously.
Release Timeline
Google may roll out the ability to bubble Android apps on tablets with Android 16’s first Quarterly Platform Release in 2026. If not, the feature might be delayed until Android 17.
While the feature is well-developed, Google has a history of scrapping features before release. However, the presence of a complete tutorial suggests a strong likelihood of implementation.
