Surveys indicate that nearly half of the British public views the new prime minister favorably, marking a stark contrast to the political struggles that hampered the party earlier in 2026. According to Agence France-Presse, a YouGov poll published Thursday placed Labour support at 24 percent, ahead of Reform UK at 22 percent.

In a bid to ease cost-of-living strains, Burnham has lowered electricity charges, placed a limit on bus fares, and decreased business rates for live music venues, pubs, and clubs. He also established a No. 10 North office in Manchester to devolve regional powers and boost gross domestic product. Despite these steps, party members and external analysts have highlighted an underlying anxiety regarding the government’s long-term strategy. Political scientist Tim Bale told Agence France-Presse that questions remain over how long Labour’s current poll bounce will last amid a tight fiscal environment.

Policy Commitments and Economic Challenges Ahead

Burnham faces intense scrutiny over how he intends to fulfill manifesto promises to end rough sleeping, reform the welfare system, fund a new social care service, reindustrialize the country, and raise defense spending. Former government minister Tony McNulty told Agence France-Presse that the prime minister must flesh out a promised 10-year plan for Britain during his keynote speech on Tuesday. McNulty noted that the address needs to go beyond broad brushstrokes and online engagement to provide substantive policy details.

Fiscal flexibility remains heavily constrained by Labour election manifesto commitments barring increases to income tax, national insurance contributions, or value-added tax. These restrictions place significant pressure on finance minister John Healey ahead of his inaugural budget scheduled for October 28. Labour MP Alex Sobel told Agence France-Presse that he expects concrete proposals to support young people, pointing to government statistics showing that 981,000 individuals aged 16 to 24 are currently not in employment, education, or training.
