Former world number one Andy Murray shared his insights on his brief coaching stint with Novak Djokovic, Djokovic’s recent injury setbacks, and his own observations of the tennis star’s performance following his return to competition.
Murray’s Coaching Experience with Djokovic
Andy Murray briefly coached Novak Djokovic in 2024, following Djokovic’s split with coach Goran Ivanisevic. Murray described djokovic as a “challenging character” to coach, noting the extremely demanding nature of his game and approach to tennis. He acknowledged the high expectations surrounding coaching a player considered among the best of all time.
“Novak, like myself, is a challenging character in terms of the way he goes about his tennis, [it] is extremely demanding,” Murray stated, as reported by BBC Sport.
Despite the challenges, Murray expressed satisfaction with the experience. “I look back on it and I’m glad that I did it. It’s an amazing experience that I’ve had,” he said.
Djokovic’s Injury and Subsequent losses
Djokovic’s coaching partnership with Murray was cut short by an injury sustained during the 2024 Australian Open. He overcame Carlos alcaraz to reach the semi-finals, but was forced to retire injured during his match against Alexander zverev. ESPN reported on the retirement, citing a medial ligament injury.
Following the injury, Djokovic faced a tough period, experiencing first-round losses at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha and the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Murray’s Perspective on Djokovic’s Struggles
Murray acknowledged the unfortunate timing of Djokovic’s injury at the Australian Open, but praised his performance in the tournament prior to the injury. “It was unfortunate what happened in Australia with the injury, but I watched him play ridiculous tennis in that tournament,” Murray commented.
He also expressed disappointment with Djokovic’s results after the injury,but framed the experience as a learning opportunity regarding the complexities of coaching. “After the injury, it was certainly a difficult few months for him, but also I think for the team and all of us.I was disappointed. Problably didn’t get the results I would have liked for him. But I learned a lot about what coaching is,” Murray explained.
