Andy Murray and Ivan Lendl: A Successful Coaching Partnership
Andy Murray has often praised Ivan Lendl as a key factor in his tennis success. Together, they formed a strong coaching relationship that helped Murray rise to the top of the sport, earning him a place among tennis legends.
While many great players do not make successful coaches, Lendl stands out. He won eight Grand Slam titles as a player and successfully transitioned to coaching. Now, as Murray enters retirement, he is set to coach Novak Djokovic, and Lendl has taken on a new role with Hubert Hurkacz.
Andy Murray on Ivan Lendl’s Coaching
Lendl coached Murray across three periods: from 2011 to 2014, 2016 to 2017, and 2022 to 2023. During these times, Murray secured three Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals, and reached the world number one ranking in 2016.
Murray highlighted Lendl’s impact on his mindset. After winning Wimbledon in 2013, he remarked on Lendl’s honesty and directness in their relationship. Lendl taught Murray to learn from losses. He expressed appreciation for Lendl’s feedback, saying that hard work pleased him while lack of effort disappointed him.
Murray noted that Lendl changed his approach in crucial matches, emphasizing a more aggressive mindset.
Records with Ivan Lendl and Hubert Hurkacz’s 2024 Performance
Before Lendl’s guidance, Murray had a commendable record, winning 323 matches and losing 107 in seven seasons. However, he hadn’t clinched a major title. In 2011, after Lendl began coaching him, Murray’s performance improved. He won 56 matches that year, up from 46 in the previous year.
From 2011 to 2014 and again from 2016 to 2017, Murray recorded a total of 268 match wins under Lendl’s mentorship.
Lendl is now coaching Hubert Hurkacz, who played 59 matches in 2024, winning 40. Hurkacz claimed the Estoril title, marking his first championship on clay. Although he faced injuries toward the season’s end, he aims to regain full fitness with Lendl’s support as they prepare for the offseason.
