Andy Serkis’ Animated ‘Animal Farm’ Premieres at Annecy

Andy Serkis’ animated adaptation of George Orwell’s ”Animal Farm” made its global debut at the Annecy Animation Festival. Serkis expressed his delight in presenting the film,a project decades in the making.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Seth Rogen as Napoleon, Gaten Matarazzo as lucky, Woody harrelson as Boxer, and Laverne Cox as Snowball. Iman Vellani, Kieran Culkin, and glenn Close also lend their voices to the project.

Serkis said he was drawn to adapt “Animal Farm” after reading it as a child and seeing a theatrical production in the 1980s. He realized the potential for a visual telling of the story while working on “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
Serkis chose animation to maintain the original book’s innocence while addressing darker themes. He noted that a live-action version would have been inherently darker from the start.
Humor, particularly through Napoleon’s character, plays a significant role in the adaptation. Serkis wanted to avoid a stereotypical villain, reflecting the complexities of the modern world where truth is frequently enough obscured.
Casting choices were crucial, with actors like Seth Rogen, Jim Parsons, and Glenn Close remaining committed to the project for over a decade. Steve Buscemi, Iman Vellani, and Laverne Cox later joined the cast, driven by their passion for the book.
