Andy Serkis’s “Animal Farm”⁣ Adaptation Takes⁤ Animated Route

Updated June 16, 2025

Andy Serkis, who has wanted to adapt George Orwell’s “Animal ⁣Farm” as childhood, has realized his vision with an animated film that premiered at the Annecy International Animation film Festival. This marks a departure from his initial plans in 2012 for a motion-capture adaptation.

Serkis told The Wrap that a live-action version would have been too bleak.⁢ He said animation provides an innocence that ⁣allows the audience to connect more profoundly, retaining meaningful characters while freeing⁢ the story from strict reality.

Previous ‍adaptations include a 1999 live-action television film featuring the voices of Kelsey Grammer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and a 1954 animated version partially funded by⁣ the CIA as an ⁤anti-communist ‍effort.

Serkis⁢ noted that several studios⁤ initially rejected the project, ‍deeming⁤ it too political. Cinesite Studios took on the project in 2022. Serkis aimed to tell the story in a comedic⁢ and heartwarming way, ensuring the audience⁣ cares about the characters.

Serkis stated that while the world is always challenging, the film doesn’t draw specific⁢ comparisons to any current political party or⁢ person, as its development began 14 years ago.

Speaking with Variety, Serkis mentioned that the film, featuring the voice talents of Seth Rogen, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, and ‍Steve buscemi, ‍was not made for any algorithm. He felt animation was simply the right way to tell ‍the story for a new generation.

What’s next

Following its premiere, “Animal‍ Farm” is⁣ expected to seek distribution for a wider release, bringing Serkis’s ‍long-awaited ‍adaptation to audiences.
