Gomes Aims for England World Cup Role Amid Midfield Challenges
updated june 16, 2025
Andre Gomes is determined to secure a role with england in the upcoming World Cup, a goal fueled by his triumphant England appearances last year. His England chance came after demonstrating his playmaking abilities.
Gomes debuted for England in a 2-0 victory against Ireland last September and followed up with a full debut against Finland at Wembley three days later. His performances highlighted his potential to fill a crucial role in England’s midfield.
England has struggled to find a consistent deep-lying midfielder. Gareth Southgate even experimented with Trent Alexander-Arnold, typically a right-back, in that position during Euro 2024. Gomes’ ball control and passing accuracy have drawn attention as a possible solution.
During the game against Finland, Gomes had 131 touches, completing 94% of his passes. In a subsequent Nations League match in Helsinki, he had 108 touches, completed 97% of his passes, and assisted Jack Grealish in a 3-1 victory.
Despite his success, Gomes faced criticism suggesting his call-up was due to favoritism from Lee Carsley, his former Under-21 coach.
“It was difficult to hear people saying it was a favor as I knew personally it wasn’t,” Gomes said.
He noted that Southgate had mentioned him before the Euros and that he received a genuine pre-call selection message, confirming his place was earned.
While Thomas Tuchel’s arrival has presented challenges, Gomes remains focused on his international ambitions. Although he hasn’t yet been selected under Tuchel, the coach has assured him he is still being considered for England.
“We’ve spoken, we had a couple of video calls and a few messages,” Gomes added. “He is vrey good in the sense that he is always watching and supporting.”
Gomes is determined to break into the squad and sees the world cup as the ultimate goal.
“The World Cup is the aim. The pinnacle,” he said. “That’s an aim of mine and I know what needs to be done to get me there.”
What’s next
Gomes is preparing for his second consecutive season in the Champions League, while keeping his sights firmly set on representing England at the World Cup. His ability to secure a consistent role in his club will be critical to achieving his international aspirations.
