Angelo Todaro,⁤ a cartoonist renowned for his work on mandrake the Magician and ⁣ The Phantom comics, as ⁣well as various other popular Italian comics from the 1960s through the 1990s,⁢ has died at the age of 79.

Born in Fragagnano, in the province of Taranto, in December ⁣1945, Todaro moved to Rome ⁢in the early 1960s to attend art school. He began his career as a designer for Co.F.edit, creating stories such as Gordon Schott and Dog. He then joined Fratelli Spada publishing house, which published Italian-made stories of ‍U.S. characters. This led to a fruitful collaboration where he drew many stories of Mandrake, The Phantom, and Rip Kirby, sometimes using the pseudonyms ⁣Paul Bennett⁤ and Todd.

in ⁣1969, ⁤Todaro joined Alberto‍ giolitti’s studio, where ‍he drew various types of stories, including police, western, war, and science fiction, for foreign markets in germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He also worked on erotic series for Ediperiodici (later Edifumetti) in Italy until the 1990s. Additionally, ⁤he founded the Puntolinea studio, which focused on illustrations and costume and sports ‍magazines, including the monthly Puglia Turismo.
