ANAHEIM, Calif. – Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington is taking an indefinite leave of absence due to health issues. Bench coach Ray Montgomery will step into the managerial role, beginning with Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros. The team is hoping Montgomery’s leadership role will keep them competitive.
Washington, 73, reported feeling fatigued and experiencing shortness of breath following a series against the New York Yankees. After being cleared by Yankees doctors to travel home with the team Thursday, he underwent further medical evaluations Friday. General Manager Perry Minasian announced Washington’s status before Friday’s game.
While the Angels did not disclose specific symptoms, they confirmed Washington addressed the team with Minasian on Friday. He planned to watch the game from Minasian’s suite at Angel Stadium. Washington was unavailable for media comment.
Minasian emphasized the importance of Washington’s health. “Wash has not felt great the last couple of days,” Minasian said. “We want to make sure he’s 100 percent before he’s back in the dugout and managing. I love the guy too much.”
Washington, who previously led the Texas Rangers to consecutive World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011, was hired by Minasian prior to the 2024 season. That year, the Angels suffered a franchise-worst 99 losses.The team’s role in the AL West is to improve.
Prior to Friday’s game, the Angels held a 36-38 record, trailing the AL West-leading astros by 6½ games. They boast a major league-best .714 winning percentage in one-run games (15-6) and are undefeated in extra innings (5-0).
Minasian reiterated the priority of Washington’s well-being. “For me, I want to make sure the guy is absolutely healthy, and physically, he’s in the right place before we put him back in the dugout,” Minasian said.
