Egyptian Music Icon, Angham, Clarifies ‘Voice of Egypt’ Title Controversy
CAIRO — Egyptian music icon Angham has stirred up social media chatter after appearing on Lamis Al-Hadidi’s "Last Words" show, where he addressed the contentious "Voice of Egypt" title.
Angham, renowned for his illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, stressed that he doesn’t claim the title as his exclusive right. "Anyone can call themselves the ‘Voice of Egypt’," he said, adding that he didn’t register it with any authority nor did his late father, music maestro Muhammad Ali Suleiman, who first gave him the title on stage.
The debate over this title between Angham and fellow artist Sherin has been brewing for months, with both artists sharing their views on its significance. Sherin, during a social media appearance, declined to engage in the debate, asserting that his name and success speak for themselves.
During the interview, Angham expressed well-wishes for Sherin, likening her to a little sister. He commended her talent but hoped for her stability and happiness with her daughters.
Music critic Ahmed Al-Samahi weighed in on the dispute, labeling it a "trivial war." He believes no single artist can claim the ‘Voice of Egypt’ title, as it’s the public and press who give such titles temporarily. Al-Samahi drew parallels with past instances, such as Nadia El-Gendy’s "star of the people" and Nabila Obaid’s "Egypt’s first star", all of which faded with time.
Angham, reflecting on his personal life, abraisions relationship with his father and the emotional impact of his family’s losses. He revealed his affinity for detail-oriented song production and expressed his desire for his two sons, Omar and Abdel Rahman, to inherit his intellectual property.
Prior to the interview, Angham launched his latest album, "Tigi Nassib", at a grand event in Cairo. In Saudi Arabia, he was awarded ‘Most Popular Song’ at the "Joy Awards" alongside Tamer Ashur.
the “Voice of Egypt” title in Egyptian music has sparked debate, highlighting the complex dynamics of artistic recognition and public perception.
