Annette Wilde, a 57-year-old hairdresser from London, experienced chronic urinary incontinence for nine years before finding a management solution that allowed her to resume normal activities. Her experience highlights a common health issue, with estimates suggesting that one in three women experience bladder leakage, according to pelvic health expert Louise Field.

The Impact of Incontinence on Daily Life

For nearly a decade, Wilde’s life was defined by the proximity of public restrooms. Moving from Northamptonshire to London four years ago exacerbated the problem, as the time required for commuting made managing the condition difficult. Wilde reported that she began avoiding wearing jeans or trousers due to the risk of visible accidents. The constant fear of being caught short was awful. It meant that every time I went out, I had to plan and think: ‘Where is the nearest toilet?’ said Wilde. By December 2025, the condition reached a point where Wilde experienced accidents in public settings, including a boat trip on the River Thames. These events led to significant personal distress.

Prevalence and Medical Perspective

While Wilde initially attributed her symptoms to aging and childbirth, the prevalence of the condition is widespread. Louise Field, founder of Adore Your Pelvic Floor, notes that while one in three women report bladder leakage, the actual number may be higher. A review published in Current Urology suggests that the condition affects more than 50 percent of women globally. Pelvic floor exercises are a must for managing incontinence. Despite the commonality of the issue, many women do not seek medical evaluation, often assuming that symptoms are an inevitable part of aging.

Management and Long-term Outlook

Wilde’s approach to the condition changed after she adopted a device recommended by a friend, which she described as a daily cost-effective solution. While she previously relied on carrying spare clothing and hygiene supplies, the change allowed her to regain confidence in her professional and personal life. The case highlights the importance of addressing bladder health, as untreated incontinence can lead to significant changes in lifestyle and mental well-being.
