CHICAGO – The roar of the Wrigley faithful will reach a fever pitch this Saturday as Anthony Rizzo, the heart adn soul of the Chicago Cubs’ historic 2016 World Series team, returns to the Kind Confines. Rizzo, 36, will officially retire as a Cub in an emotional on-field ceremony before the game against the Tampa Bay Rays, solidifying his place as a legend in Chicago baseball lore.
More than just a skilled first baseman,Rizzo embodied the spirit of the Cubs during his decade-long tenure. Acquired in a trade in 2012, he quickly became a cornerstone of the franchise, leading them to the postseason from 2015-2018 and, most importantly, breaking the 108-year curse in 2016. His infectious enthusiasm, unwavering dedication, and clutch performances endeared him to fans and teammates alike.
“Anthony Rizzo was the face of one of the most prosperous eras in Chicago Cubs history, and we are so excited he will be a part of our institution for many years to come,” said Cubs executive chairman tom Ricketts. “His play on the field spoke for itself.”
Rizzo’s numbers tell a story of consistent excellence: a career .828 OPS, 303 home runs, three all-star selections, and four Gold Glove awards. But his impact extended far beyond the stat sheet. He was a leader in the clubhouse, a mentor to younger players, and a symbol of hope for a city starved for a championship.
His performance in the 2016 postseason was nothing short of heroic. Rizzo batted .360 with a .484 on-base percentage in the World Series against Cleveland, following a .320 showing in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Beyond the diamond, Rizzo’s legacy is defined by his compassion and commitment to giving back.
