AI Firms Scramble for High-Quality‍ Training Data

Updated June 26, 2025

Artificial intelligence companies ⁢face an increasing demand for high-quality training data, the fuel that powers large language models. ‍This demand has led to some ⁣unusual strategies, including, in at least one instance, the ‍scanning and destruction of millions of books.

Large language models, such as those used in ChatGPT and Claude, are built by feeding billions of words into neural networks. The AI system analyzes this text, identifying statistical relationships between words and concepts. The quality of this training data directly impacts the AI model’s capabilities. Models trained on well-edited books and articles generally perform better than those trained on lower-quality sources.

Publishers⁣ control much of the content AI companies need. Licensing negotiations can be complex, leading some companies to seek choice solutions. The “first-sale doctrine” allows the purchaser of a physical book ‍to do whatever they want with that copy, including destroying it after scanning.

Anthropic, like other AI companies, initially took a less conventional route in its quest ⁢for high-quality training data. According to court filings, the company initially⁣ amassed digitized versions of pirated books to avoid licensing negotiations, which CEO Dario Amodei termed a “legal/practice/business slog.” Though, by 2024, Anthropic shifted away from using ‍pirated ebooks due to legal concerns and sought a more secure source of data.

What’s⁤ next

The search for high-quality training data will likely continue to drive innovation and legal maneuvering ⁣within the AI ⁣industry as companies seek to improve their models ⁣while navigating copyright ⁣and ethical considerations.
