Alphabet posted a record $112.1 billion in net income for the second quarter of 2026, marking the first time the company—parent of Google—has exceeded $100 billion in quarterly profit. The figure, which surpassed the combined annual revenue of 459 Fortune 500 companies, was driven by a 24% year-over-year increase in revenue to $119.8 billion, with Google Cloud’s 82% growth cited as a key driver. However, the bulk of the profit came from non-operational sources, including $99 billion in gains from Alphabet’s investment portfolio, according to the company’s earnings release.

Alphabet’s Q2 results reflect a combination of operational success and windfall gains from its stakes in artificial intelligence (AI) companies. The $99 billion in “unrealized and realized” gains on equity securities, primarily from investments in Anthropic and SpaceX, accounted for $6.26 of the company’s $9.11 earnings per share. These gains were bolstered by the rapid valuation increases of both companies, with SpaceX reaching a $1.77 trillion valuation after its June 2026 initial public offering (IPO) and Anthropic’s private-market valuation surging from $350 billion to $965 billion in the same period.

The investment strategy, which began with a $300 million stake in Anthropic in April 2023, has grown to a $13.3 billion holding, with additional commitments of up to $30 billion. As part of the arrangement, Anthropic agreed to purchase at least five gigawatts of computing power from Google Cloud—a deal that directly contributed to the 82% year-over-year growth in Cloud revenue. This interplay between Alphabet’s investments and its core business has raised questions about the circularity of the financial benefits.

The same dollars appear to flow in a loop: Alphabet invests in Anthropic, Anthropic uses the funds to buy Google Cloud services, and the resulting valuation gains are recorded as Alphabet’s profits.

Despite the record results, Alphabet’s stock fell 3% in after-hours trading following the earnings report. Investors expressed concern over the company’s rising capital expenditures, which have been increased to a 2026 range of $195 billion to $205 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $180 billion to $190 billion. The company also faces intensified competition in its AI sector, particularly with the development of its Gemini family of models.

The financial performance underscores the growing influence of AI investments in shaping corporate earnings. Alphabet’s $99 billion windfall from its investment portfolio highlights how tech giants are leveraging strategic stakes in emerging technologies to supplement traditional revenue streams. However, the reliance on such gains has also drawn scrutiny, with analysts questioning whether the profits are sustainable or reflective of broader market trends.

For context, Alphabet’s Q2 profit of $112.1 billion exceeds the annual revenue of 459 Fortune 500 companies, including firms like Ford, Coca-Cola, and Procter & Gamble. The figure also represents a 298% year-over-year increase, driven by both operational growth and the surge in valuation of its investment holdings.

The company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, attributed the results to the “full stack approach to AI,” emphasizing the value of integrating hardware, software, and cloud infrastructure. “Our AI strategy is delivering real, measurable value,” Pichai stated in a press release. However, the financial breakdown reveals that much of the profit stems from external market movements rather than direct business operations.

The role of Alphabet’s investment in Anthropic has been particularly scrutinized. While the company has not disclosed the exact contribution of each investment to the $99 billion gain, the valuation jumps of both Anthropic and SpaceX have been significant. SpaceX’s IPO, which valued the company at $1.77 trillion, marked a major milestone for the private spaceflight firm, which had a $400 billion valuation as a private company a year earlier.

Analysts note that Alphabet’s strategy reflects a broader trend among tech firms to diversify their revenue sources through strategic investments.

As Alphabet continues to expand its AI capabilities and invest in high-growth sectors, the balance between operational performance and financial engineering will remain under scrutiny. The company’s ability to sustain such profit levels will depend on both its core business growth and the continued success of its investment portfolio. For now, the Q2 results highlight the evolving landscape of corporate finance in the age of AI.
