Antibiotic Awareness: The Importance of Responsible Use During Cold and Flu Season
Antibiotic Awareness: What You Need to Know
Cold and flu season brings many people to the doctor’s office. Some may request antibiotics to feel better. Healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of using antibiotics properly.
Dr. Ellie Nowak, an Infectious Disease Specialist at Carilion Clinic, defines antibiotic resistance. This occurs when bacteria adapt and survive despite antibiotic treatment. As a result, it becomes harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat infections.
The CDC reports that over 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year. At least 35,000 people die from these infections.
Dr. Nowak stresses that antibiotics are vital but should only be used for specific bacterial infections. Using them incorrectly can cause resistance and unnecessary side effects.
In recognition of Antibiotic Awareness Week, the Wells Fargo Tower in Roanoke will be lit purple.
