Antoine Fuqua has built a career on movies with irresistible heroes. Now he’s telling the story of the King of Pop.

Fuqua, known for action films such as Training Day and The Equalizer, is directing Michael, a biopic about Michael Jackson that is set to premiere in theaters on April 24, 2026. The film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the title role and is produced by Graham King, who previously produced the Academy Award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody.

According to Fuqua, authenticity was the cornerstone of the project. He emphasized filming at meaningful locations, including Hayvenhurst, the Jackson family compound in Encino, California and the exact site where Jackson filmed the iconic Thriller music video. Fuqua also highlighted the importance of recreating Jackson’s stage costumes with precision to honor the artist’s legacy.

Fuqua said the moment he knew the film was working came on the first day of shooting, when Jaafar Jackson performed Bad in front of 500 to 600 extras. “Seeing Jaafar do that, when he had never acted before, in front of 500 or 600 screaming extras, felt like a real concert,” Fuqua recalled. “That was a pivotal moment for me. I was understanding Michael from a more intimate perspective.”

The film traces Jackson’s journey from his early years in Gary, Indiana, through his time with the Jackson 5 under the guidance of his father Joe Jackson—portrayed by Coleman Domingo—and into his early solo career. Fuqua described the project as an effort to capture both the artistry and complexity of Jackson’s life, aiming to resonate with audiences worldwide.

With Michael, Fuqua steps into new territory, applying his experience in crafting compelling, character-driven narratives to the story of one of the most influential figures in music history. The film aims to balance spectacle with intimacy, offering audiences a chance to experience Jackson’s story on the big screen.
