Orlando City is in advanced discussions to bring Antoine Griezmann, the veteran Atlético Madrid forward, to Major League Soccer. The potential move, reported by multiple sources including The Athletic and ESPN, represents a significant coup for the Florida-based club as they seek to fill their open Designated Player slot.

While no agreement has been finalized, Orlando City has reportedly been the frontrunner in pursuing the 34-year-old Frenchman. Sporting Director Ricardo Moreira has made multiple trips to Spain to negotiate a deal, according to reports. Griezmann’s long-stated interest in MLS, coupled with Orlando’s possession of his discovery rights, has positioned them favorably in the competition for his signature. Other MLS clubs, including Inter Miami, had previously expressed interest, but were unable to pursue him due to roster limitations.

Griezmann’s potential arrival would add considerable firepower to an Orlando City side that recently suffered a 1-2 defeat at home to New York Red Bull in their 2026 season opener. The club is hoping to quickly finalize the transfer and integrate Griezmann into the squad before the MLS primary transfer window closes on March 26th.

The allure of MLS for Griezmann extends beyond simply a new professional challenge. He has frequently vacationed in the United States and demonstrated an affinity for American sports culture, notably being spotted at NBA games and even shouting out former Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose after France’s 2018 World Cup victory. This existing connection to the U.S. Appears to be a significant factor in his desire to play in the league.

Griezmann’s career has been marked by success at both the club and international levels. He currently plays for Atlético Madrid, where he has recorded 69 goals in 187 appearances across all competitions since rejoining the club in 2021. Prior to his return to Madrid, he spent three seasons with Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey in 2021. He was also a key figure in Atlético’s Europa League triumph in 2017-18 and their Super Cup victory in 2018.

On the international stage, Griezmann was instrumental in France’s 2018 World Cup win, scoring four goals and adding two assists throughout the tournament. He has consistently been a vital component of the French national team, showcasing his versatility and attacking prowess.

Orlando City has a history of attracting high-profile players to MLS. The club famously brought in Kaká, the Ballon d’Or winner, as one of their first Designated Players in 2015 and later featured former Portugal winger Nani for three seasons. Griezmann would continue this tradition, adding another globally recognized name to the Orlando City roster.

The timing of a potential move is complex, as Griezmann is expected to be a key player for France at the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer. However, sources indicate that the decision ultimately rests with Griezmann regarding whether he joins Orlando City immediately or waits until after the tournament.

Despite being 34 years old, Griezmann remains a valuable asset. He has six goals in La Liga this season and continues to be an important part of Diego Simeone’s squad at Atlético Madrid, who are on the verge of qualifying for the Copa del Rey final. His experience, skill, and proven goal-scoring ability would undoubtedly be a significant addition to Orlando City and MLS.

Griezmann himself has openly expressed his desire to play in MLS, stating in an interview with AS last year, “Everyone knows that MLS is my dream and my goal.” This clear ambition, combined with Orlando City’s proactive pursuit, suggests that a move to Florida is increasingly likely.
