Fulham defender Antonee Robinson, a key player for both his club and the United States men’s national team, recently underwent successful, though minor, knee surgery. The club confirmed the procedure Wednesday.
Robinson, considered one of the top American players in Europe, will begin rehabilitation promptly. Fulham anticipates he will be ready to play when the Premier League season starts in August. However, the injury sidelines him for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup with the USMNT.
Robinson was already absent from the USMNT’s roster for June friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland due to the knee issue. Other notable players, including Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna, Yunus Musah, and Christian Pulisic, were also left off the roster.
Pulisic is taking a break after playing more than 3,500 minutes for AC Milan this season. U.S. Soccer coach Mauricio Pochettino defended the decision to rest key players at a press conference last week.
“Many people can say it’s really importent for us to be all together for the last time before the World Cup,” he said.”We decided the best for him [Pulisic] the best of the team, the best for the national team is the decision that we made.”
Pochettino added that while being together is critically important, it’s also crucial to create challenges and not underestimate individual players. He believes building a team involves both time together and individual growth.
In related news, U.S.Soccer announced that Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte will also miss the friendlies due to an oblique injury. Chris Brady of Chicago will replace him on the roster. Schulte was injured during warmups before a Major League Soccer match against Charlotte FC.
Brady joins Matt Turner, Zack Steffen, and Matt Freese as goalkeeping options for the U.S. team.
The U.S. will kick off its gold Cup campaign June 15 against Trinidad and Tobago, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia on June 19 and Haiti on June 22.
What’s next
Robinson will focus on his rehabilitation to ensure he is fit for Fulham’s preseason training. The USMNT will proceed with thier friendlies and Gold Cup preparations, integrating Chris Brady into the goalkeeping pool.
