Malaysia and India Forge Deeper Strategic Partnership

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – February 8, 2026 – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has hailed his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “very vital, very strategic and critical” to the advancement of bilateral ties between the two nations. The assessment came following extensive talks held over the weekend, signaling a significant strengthening of the comprehensive strategic partnership established in 2024.

Ibrahim emphasized the long-standing relationship between Malaysia and India, dating back to 1957, but underscored the recent elevation to a more comprehensive strategic level. He pointed to the “deep historical ties, strong people-to-people linkages, and ever-expanding economic cooperation” as foundational elements of the relationship.

The discussions between the two leaders covered a broad spectrum of collaborative areas, with both sides expressing a commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. These include trade and investment, the burgeoning semiconductor industry, the digital economy, trade utilizing local currencies, enhanced connectivity, energy cooperation, agriculture, food security, defense and security, education, healthcare, tourism, culture, and continued people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, February 7th, received a grand red-carpet reception, personally welcomed by Ibrahim at the airport. He was also accorded a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra on Sunday morning.

During a joint press conference, Modi described the relationship between India and Malaysia as “special,” noting their shared status as maritime neighbors with centuries of deep and affectionate ties. He highlighted that Malaysia is home to the second largest population of Indian origin globally, further solidifying the cultural and historical bonds between the two countries.

Beyond economic and cultural ties, the leaders addressed critical security concerns. Modi reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism, stating, “Our message on terrorism is clear: no double standards, no compromise.” Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, intelligence sharing, and maritime security, with plans to make defense cooperation more comprehensive.

The prime ministers also discussed the importance of technological collaboration, specifically focusing on advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security. Modi emphasized the role of the Indo-Pacific region as a key growth engine for the world, reaffirming India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability across the region in collaboration with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The visit comes amidst growing global uncertainty, as noted by Ibrahim, who emphasized the need for regional voices advocating for dialogue and cooperation over confrontation and narrow self-interest. He described Modi not only as a strategic partner but also as a close friend, highlighting the personal connection that underpins the strengthening bilateral relationship.

The two leaders also touched upon the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, with Modi acknowledging the role they play in strengthening ties between the two nations. He had the opportunity to meet with members of the diaspora on Saturday, an event also attended by Prime Minister Ibrahim.

The discussions and agreements reached during this visit signal a new era of cooperation between India and Malaysia, building on a foundation of shared history, cultural ties, and a mutual commitment to economic and security cooperation in a rapidly changing global landscape.
