Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim addressed concerns surrounding the postponed Urban Renewal Bill, stressing its intent to improve housing for lower-income groups and dismissing claims of racial bias. This report provides a detailed overview of his statements and the context surrounding the bill.
Bill Aims to Improve Housing, Not Displace Communities
Anwar Ibrahim urged stakeholders to view the Urban Renewal Bill as a positive step towards redeveloping dilapidated areas and providing more pleasant housing for the poor. The debate on the bill was postponed after its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat (Malaysia’s House of Representatives) on August 28, 2024, according to reporting by bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency.
He explicitly stated the bill was “not drafted to take away Malay rights,” but rather to address the living conditions of those in substandard housing. He refuted allegations that the project would lead to Chinese ownership or displacement, asserting his government’s commitment to defending the interests of all races.
“the talk about Chinese taking over or seizing (rights),that is not true. We will defend the interests of all races,” Anwar said. ”The main aim of the development is to benefit the M40, B40 and poor groups. Many Malays are in this category, but there are also Indians and Chinese.”
Increased Consent Threshold and Addressing Realities
To address concerns about displacement and ensure community buy-in, the government has agreed to raise the threshold for owner/occupant consent required for redevelopment projects to approximately 80%.This increase aims to provide greater assurance to residents that their interests will be considered.
Anwar Ibrahim criticized those who he believes lack understanding of the realities faced by many Malaysians. He highlighted the prevalence of overcrowding, wiht large families living in small flats and even multiple families sharing a single unit. He emphasized the need for elected representatives to engage directly with communities to fully grasp these hardships.
“According to him, some people speak without understanding the realities of people’s lives, when in fact there are still large families living in small flats, and even cases where two families have to share a single unit,” Bernama reported.
Call for Unity and Loyalty
Alongside the discussion of the Urban Renewal Bill, Anwar Ibrahim also issued a broader call for national unity. He urged all parties to “empower unity, consensus and teamwork” and cautioned against questioning loyalty to the country. This statement suggests a desire to foster a more cohesive political environment as the government pursues its development agenda.
“Make this an chance to empower unity, consensus and teamwork. Do not question loyalty to the country,” he said.
