Pope Francis’s Hospitalization: A May Day of Concern and Intensive Care

Anxiety mounts for Pope Francis. After a weekend of cautious optimism, following a press conference featuring doctors who have treated him at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the Pontiff entered into one of the most challenging days of his hospitalization, which began earlier on February 14. On the morning of May, Pope Francis experienced what doctors described as “An asthmatiform respiratory crisis of prolonged entity over time, which also requested the application of oxygen with high flows.”

“The conditions of the Holy Father continue to be critical, therefore, as explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger,” pressed the medical bulletin released in the evening by the Vatican press office. This morning the blood tests also highlighted “a plateletopenia,” a deficiency of platelets, “associated with anemia, which required the administration of transfusions.”

The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in the armchair even if more suffering than yesterday,
and “at the moment the prognosis is reserved”,
the bulletin explained.

A doctor speaking about this incident explained in an interview with a news agency, ”Respiratory crisis, plateletopenia and anemia are serious conditions, despite using the highest flows of oxygen, the delivery was highly obstructed,”

Doctors are currently interpreting these new symptoms to better provide care for the Pope, who is suffering from “bilateral pneumonia” along with his other complications.

The Pope today he spent a great part of his time in his bed rest. On the other hand, doctors reserved an important prognosis. They are utterly concerned about the Pope.

The uncertain prognosis and the type of treatment now needed has understandably caused an atmosphere of worry, which is compounded by the directness of the Vatican’s public statements. Today, the Pope missed his Angelus, his regular Sunday prayer. Anyone wishing to see the Pope oversee this prayer were disappointed, as this popular event is often watched in person by thousands of faithful and online by millions. Still, the Pope did provide a written statement.

The Pope’s hospitalization has now been extended beyond its initial estimate, lasting potentially longer than a week. There was a growing excitement among some Catholics insinuating a revision in the Vatican,”I think IF I do the act of asking God: What else the Pope wants than requesting me to leave my seat. “.

On this topic, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of Vatican City told in an interview with Corriere,

“We are witnessing useless speculations , unhealthy rumors and lack of control comment is out of place.”

Following Pope John Paul II’s election, the Roman Catholic Church has received several calls for and against the papacy of retirements and resignation. Even earlier this week, President Joe Biden, issued a letter suggesting, America’s top Catholics, still hold on to the office of the Pope, including visits to the Vatican from a non-Roman Catholic background.
