Kortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – Latvia’s Kristers Aparjods came agonizingly close to a podium finish at the Olympic sliding track on Sunday, finishing fourth in the men’s singles luge competition at the February 8th Winter Olympics. Compatriot Gints Bērziņš finished tenth.

The gold medal went to Germany’s Max Langenhan, with Austria’s Jonas Müller taking silver and Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller claiming bronze. Langenhan proved dominant throughout all four heats, ultimately finishing 0.596 seconds ahead of Müller and 0.934 seconds ahead of Fischnaller.

Aparjods finished 1.421 seconds behind Langenhan, a mere 0.487 seconds off the bronze medal. A strong performance saw him consistently in fourth place after the first, second, and fourth runs. However, a seventh-place finish in the third heat, attributed to a difficult start, ultimately hampered his chances of medaling.

The near-miss is still expected to yield a significant financial reward for Aparjods. Latvian regulations stipulate a payout of approximately €30,700 for a fourth-place finish at the Olympic Games.

Austria’s Nico Glaierscher finished fifth, just 0.361 seconds behind Aparjods, while Germany’s Felix Loch rounded out the top six.

Bērziņš trailed the gold medalist by 2.852 seconds overall. He held tenth place after the first run, improved to ninth in the subsequent two heats, but a disappointing 17th-place finish in the final run relegated him back to tenth overall.

Both Latvian sliders improved upon their performances from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where Aparjods finished fifth and Bērziņš finished seventh.

This year’s Latvian Olympic delegation is the largest in the nation’s history, with 68 athletes competing across nine different sports. The team’s size reflects a growing investment in winter sports and a commitment to broader Olympic participation.

The Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo will continue through February 22nd, with Latvian athletes expected to contend in several other events. The luge results, while not bringing home a medal, demonstrate the program’s continued progress and potential for future success.

Aparjods’ performance is particularly noteworthy given the highly competitive nature of the men’s singles luge event. The margins between success and disappointment are incredibly thin, and a single mistake can be the difference between a medal and finishing just off the podium. His consistency throughout most of the competition suggests he is a genuine contender for future championships.

Bērziņš’ tenth-place finish, while not a medal-winning performance, still represents a solid result in a demanding field. His ability to briefly climb into the top nine demonstrates his potential, and he will likely be looking to build on this experience in future competitions.

The Latvian luge team’s performance at these Olympics underscores the country’s growing reputation as a force in the sport. With continued investment and development, Latvia is poised to become a consistent contender for medals in future Winter Games.
