Guangzhou, China – The first Senior Officials’ Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum for 2026 commenced today, February 10th, in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The meeting signals the formal launch of China’s year-long hosting of APEC, a key economic forum encompassing 21 member economies across the Asia-Pacific region.

The opening session brought together senior officials from APEC member states, initiating a series of discussions centered around the theme of “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together.” This theme, according to officials, underscores China’s commitment to fostering deeper regional integration and accelerating collaborative efforts within the dynamic Asia-Pacific economic landscape.

The APEC 2026 agenda prioritizes three key areas: openness, innovation, and cooperation. These priorities are intended to guide discussions and shape outcomes leading up to the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, scheduled to be held in Shenzhen City from November 18th to November 19th. Approximately 300 activities, including subsequent senior officials’ meetings and ministerial gatherings, are planned throughout the year to support these objectives.

The initial meeting cluster, running from February 1st to February 10th, encompasses approximately 60 meetings, workshops, symposia, and committee sessions. These sessions will address a broad spectrum of policy areas, ranging from combating corruption and promoting digital transformation to enhancing services competitiveness, ensuring ocean sustainability, attracting investment, and modernizing standards and customs procedures.

Ambassador Chen Xu, Chair of the APEC 2026 Senior Officials’ Meeting, emphasized the importance of the year for regional prosperity. APEC 2026 is an important opportunity for member economies to strengthen unity, deepen cooperation and advance shared prosperity for the region. China is ready to seize the opportunity to hosting the work together with all parties to advance the goal of Asia-Pacific community, Ambassador Xu stated. He further elaborated that the chosen priorities – openness, innovation, and cooperation – reflect the collective aspirations of the region to bolster economic integration, embrace digital opportunities, and collectively address pressing global and regional challenges.

Key APEC groups convened during this initial meeting cluster, including the Committee on Trade and Investment. Discussions within this committee are focused on supporting the multilateral trading system, facilitating trade, and promoting economic integration within the region. These discussions are expected to contribute to the broader APEC agenda and inform policy recommendations for the Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen.

The choice of Guangzhou and Shenzhen as host cities for key APEC events is significant. Guangzhou, a major commercial and manufacturing hub in southern China, and Shenzhen, a pioneering special economic zone and technology center, represent China’s economic dynamism and its commitment to opening up to the world. Guangdong Province, where Guangzhou is located, has been at the forefront of China’s economic reforms and its integration into global supply chains.

While the APEC forum does not have the binding authority of a traditional international organization, it serves as a crucial platform for dialogue and cooperation among its member economies. It facilitates the exchange of ideas, the development of best practices, and the pursuit of common goals related to trade, investment, and economic growth. The forum’s influence stems from the combined economic weight of its members, which represent approximately 40% of the world’s population and nearly 50% of global trade.

The meeting also comes against a backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region. Increased strategic competition between major powers, coupled with ongoing trade tensions and regional security concerns, underscore the importance of APEC as a forum for maintaining stability and promoting cooperation. China’s hosting of APEC in 2026 provides an opportunity for the country to demonstrate its leadership role in the region and to advance its economic and diplomatic interests.

Beyond the formal meetings and policy discussions, APEC 2026 is expected to generate a range of economic and cultural activities throughout the year. These activities will aim to promote people-to-people exchanges, foster innovation, and showcase China’s economic achievements. The broader impact of APEC 2026 will be assessed based on the tangible outcomes achieved in advancing regional economic integration and addressing shared challenges.

In a related development, China on Tuesday also urged the Philippines to cease what it termed as unscrupulous political manipulation and self-directed farce at sea, referring to the Philippines’ actions near Huangyan Dao (Scarborough Shoal). Jiang Bin, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense, reaffirmed China’s territorial claims over the area, accusing the Philippines of using fishermen as tools to infringe upon China’s rights and create friction. This separate issue highlights the complex geopolitical landscape in the region and the potential for tensions to arise alongside economic cooperation initiatives like APEC.
