Appeals and Bail Requests for Former Grenoble Players Convicted
Rugby Players Convicted in French Rape case Plan to Appeal
Bordeaux, France – The legal battle is far from over for several rugby players convicted in a high-profile rape case in France. Denis Coulson, sentenced to 14 years in prison, has announced his intention to appeal the verdict.
Coulson’s co-defendants, Rory Grice and Loïck Jammes, also plan to challenge the court’s decision.
“A judicial decision must be respected, but it can be contested,” said Jean-Félix Luciani, one of Jammes’ lawyers. “We obviously believe in our client’s innocence and hope to demonstrate it on appeal.”
The case, which has gripped France, centers around allegations of a gang rape that occurred in 2017.While Coulson received the harshest sentence, other players received lesser penalties. Chris Farrell was given a four-year sentence, with two years suspended, and Dylan Hayes received a two-year suspended sentence for failing to assist a person in danger.
Their lawyers are still deliberating on their next steps but expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict.
“The decision is unjust and terrible,” said Arnaud lucien, Hayes’ lawyer.
The defense team is considering requesting a change of venue for the appeal, hoping to avoid a retrial in Périgueux or angoulême.
“We need to find a place where we can have a bit more serenity because we feel like we’ve fallen into a trap,” one of the defense attorneys stated.
Meanwhile, lawyers for Coulson,Jammes, and Grice are expected to file a request for their clients’ release pending appeal. This request will be submitted to the appeals court in Bordeaux.”If a request for release is made, the legal deadline for a decision is two months,” explained a legal expert. “However, this is a maximum timeframe. An audience will be held in Bordeaux, at the earliest in about 20 days, with the detainees present, and each case will be examined individually.”
