Apple’s foray into artificial intelligence has faced hurdles, despite an initial partnership with OpenAI. The company’s unveiling of Apple Intelligence last year, intended to revamp Siri, has been met with delays. This contrasts sharply with Google’s AI-centric focus at its annual I/O show.
To address these challenges, Apple is reportedly considering acquiring Perplexity AI, an emerging player in the AI landscape.
Bloomberg reported that Apple executives have engaged in internal discussions about possibly acquiring Perplexity AI. Adrian Perica, Apple’s VP of corporate advancement, and Eddy Cue, SVP of Services, are among those who have reportedly explored the possibility. These talks are preliminary, and no formal offer has been extended, according to the report.
A Perplexity AI spokesperson stated they where unaware of any merger and acquisition discussions.Apple has not yet commented.

Apple’s AI challenges
acquiring Perplexity AI and integrating its AI search capabilities into Safari and other services could significantly benefit Apple. A Google antitrust lawsuit revealed that google pays Apple approximately $20 billion to remain the default search engine for Safari.
Though, Google Search’s dominance has been declining with the rise of AI models like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity. data indicates that users are increasingly turning to AI for quicker, more efficient answers, bypassing the need to sift through multiple search pages.
While iPhone users may find workarounds for AI chatbots in the upcoming iOS 26, Apple has yet to fully integrate AI into Siri.
Reportedly, Apple has encountered repeated obstacles in developing a smarter Siri. The goal was to enable the digital assistant to better understand natural language and perform more complex tasks using on-device data, such as creating calendar appointments from text messages.
Apple initially planned to release the upgraded Siri in March, but this was delayed, leading to a leadership change. Mike Rockwell, previously responsible for the Vision Pro, replaced John Giannandrea, who had been leading the Siri upgrade team.
The upcoming iOS 26 will incorporate AI features in the Phone app, including AI-powered call screening to filter out scam calls and voicemail summaries.
Still, these AI features lag behind Google’s advancements. At its recent I/O event, Google detailed how Gemini will be integrated into services like gmail, Google Meet, and its future Android XR smart glasses.
