Apple has revised its app Store guidelines, now allowing U.S. app⁢ developers to utilize ⁤alternative payment platforms⁤ without incurring fees or commissions. this change is in response to a court order.

U.S. District Judge ‍Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland,California, had previously found Apple in non-compliance ⁣with ‌a ruling issued over three years prior, which mandated the opening of the iPhone ecosystem to competing app stores.

In September 2021,Gonzalez Rogers resolute that ⁣Apple could no longer require⁤ app developers to exclusively ‌use the App Store and its payment system, which typically charges‍ a 30% commission.

App Store Revenue a Important Portion of‍ Apple’s Income

The App Store’s exclusivity has been a substantial revenue stream for Apple. Services, encompassing the App Store, Apple music, Apple TV, and iCloud, currently account for ⁣28% of the company’s total revenue.

Facing pressure from regulators and the courts,Apple had previously permitted some developers to use alternative payment systems via⁤ web pages, but these ‌transactions were still subject to a 27% commission.

However, in her recent ruling, Gonzalez rogers stipulated⁢ that Apple could no longer ⁤collect commissions on transactions conducted ‌outside‌ the App Store. The updated Apple⁤ guidelines do not mention any commission fees,⁤ suggesting ‌that using ⁣third-party ⁣platforms is now free. This‌ change is currently limited to the United States.

The judge also ordered ‌Apple to refrain from sending ‌messages⁣ to ‌users choosing to use a third-party app store or payment ‍system, except to⁣ inform them that they are not using the⁢ App Store.

Apple‌ stated on its website that the update to its regulations was made to comply ‍with the ⁢U.S. court decision. The company also indicated plans⁤ to appeal the ruling.
