Apple announced on Monday that CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role later this year, with John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, set to succeed him as chief executive officer effective September 1, 2026.

Cook will remain with Apple as executive chairman of the board of directors following the transition, which received unanimous approval from the company’s board. The change is described as the result of “a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.”

Cook, who became CEO in 2011 after succeeding Steve Jobs, will have led Apple for 15 years. During his tenure, the company’s market value grew from approximately $300 billion to $4 trillion, according to reporting cited in the source material.

Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has recently overseen the company’s hardware engineering efforts and has played a key role in reigniting sales of products such as Apple’s Mac computers, which have gained market share in recent years. Cook described Ternus as having “the mind of an engineer” and “the soul of an innovator.”

In a statement, Cook said, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company.” He added, “I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”

Ternus responded to the appointment by saying, “Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor. I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century.”

The announcement comes amid a broader trend of CEO transitions across major corporations in 2026. Earlier this year, Greg Abel replaced Warren Buffett as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Josh D’Amaro succeeded Bob Iger at Disney, and John Furner took over from Doug McMillon at Walmart.

Leadership consultant Stephen Miles noted in the source material that “Every company has to run a faster 800 each year and you need someone fit for the 800 who has the longevity to see this through to the other side,” highlighting the increasing pressure on executives to drive transformation, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence.

The source material notes that Apple has lagged on AI development, raising questions about whether Cook should have continued in the role. It suggests that Ternus’s background as an engineer may position him well to address this challenge.

Arthur Levinson, who has served as Apple’s non-executive chairman for the past 15 years, will become lead independent director effective September 1, 2026, as part of the leadership changes.
